Rally Girls in Missouri, Iowa
and
Kentucky! Episode 2, Page 2 Welcome to page 2 of Rally Girls in Missouri, Iowa and Kentucky. On Labor Day Weekend, PoliticalShop.com had a booth at Santa-Cali-Gon, an annual street fair event in the Independence, MO town square that draws crowds of over 225,000 people. On Labor Day, Daphne covered Santa-Cali-Gon while Sandee and Sharon went to Des Moines for the Solidarity Fest sponsored by the South Central Iowa Federation of Labor. | PoliticalShop.com returns to it's Roots! Rally Girls took turns manning the booth at Santa-Cali-Gon. Here, Sandee is enjoying an afternoon break in the crowds...which didn't last long! In the evening, thousands more people descend upon Independence, MO for the annual event which features live entertainment, several craft tents and city blocks filled with vendors. On Labor Day 1992, Bill Clinton came to Independence, MO and gave a speech at Santa-Cali-Gon Days. Sharon was taking a MBA Marketing class that required an outside Entrepreneurial Project. Being Election Year, she took some buttons to this event, was surprised at the brisk sales and well...PoliticalShop was born. However, the "Dot Com" didn't come until a few years later. Hard to believe, but few people had Internet access in 1992! |

Hillary Stands Tall with Rally Girls Joann and Daphne! Joann and Daphne pose for a photo with Hillary at the Santa- Cali-Gon event in Independence, MO. As you may have guessed, it's not really Hillary. We took a Hillary cardboard cutout with us and were surprised when people flocked to our booth to get their picture taken with her! We've taken her with us everywhere we've been since, and the reaction is always the same! She's been so popular that will soon be offering Hillary cardboard cutouts for sale at PoliticalShop.com. |
![]() Move Over Iowa Straw Poll... Democrats 21st Century of Independence, MO ran a "Straw Poll" of their own in their booth at Santa Cali-Gon Days. 1,659 people stopped to vote in this "colorful" election that included the eight 2008 Democratic Candidates. Each of the eight candidates’ names and pictures were placed on a large plastic jar, with a small hole punched in the lid. Street-fair-goers who stopped at the booth were handed a piece of a plastic straw and invited to place it in the top of the jar of their favored candidate. Hillary won by a landslide with 877 (52.8%), Barack Obama came in second and the other candidates split the remaining votes. |
![]() Customer of the Year! The brains behind the straw poll and the founder and driving force behind "Democrats 21st Century" is Alta Stephens. Alta is truly a maverick! We stopped by her office located right in the heart of the Santa-Cali-Gon event. As usual, she was on the phone organizing volunteers, coordinating activities, planning events, raising funds, etc. Her drive, energy and enthusiasm is legendary in Eastern Jackson County political circles and frankly, throughout the state of Missouri. Alta has been purchasing products from PoliticalShop.com for many years, and using them to raise funds for her "Democrats 21st Century" operation. PoliticalShop.com has named Alta Stephens our "Customer of the Year for 2007!" Thanks for your business Alta and for inspiring us all! |
![]() Alta (Hearts) Hillary! Alta is also a big Hillary supporter and was the first person in Eastern Jackson County to start organizing events for the "Hillary for President" Campaign. Hillary is lucky to have her! |
![]() Alta's "Democrats 21st Century" has a booth at Santa-Cali-Gon. They support all the local Democratic Candidates as well as the Presidential Candidates. A wide selection of PoliticalShop.com buttons are available at their booth and in their storefront in Independence, MO. |
![]() Union Spirit... The Solidarity Fest in Des Moines, IA was sponsored by the South Central Iowa Federation of Labor. Besides selling our own unique button designs, PoliticalShop.com is a distributor for large union supplier, Tigereye Design. The PoliticalShop.com / Tigereye combo creates a kind of yin-yang button selection which is always a big hit with the union crowd. |
![]() Hillary was mobbed by fans wanting autographs, so we couldn't get too close, but did sneak this shot of her signing books, buttons, signs, t-shirts, etc. |

Crush the Competition
File Update ...featuring Curt the Competitor. ![]() Competitive Research... We spotted Curt the Competitor at the Solidarity Fest with a new helper. They arrived late and missed much of the event but were making up for lost time, cutting into our sales on the outflow. The new guy was selling like mad, a real workhorse, so we decided this threat had to be documented in "the file". We hid out of site and took a picture. |
![]() Busted! How does he do it? Curt always catches us taking pictures for "the file". He shot us "the evil eye" and we backed off...for now anyway. But tune in next time....because...we have a plan! |

Rally Girls Rock! As we mentioned in our first episode, Dave insisted on being a Rally Girl, even though he's never been to a Political Rally in his life and disagrees with the other Rally Girls on every political issue. He simply can't stand to be left out. Everyone else has their niche...except Dave. We decided that if he is to retain his title, he must serve a purpose. What good are all his Electrical Engineering degrees to us? The button machine rarely needs rewiring. Since Dave is a Guitar Player Extrordinaire, (aka: "Guitar God"), we decided that he should come up with a Rally Girls Theme Song. Dave and Sharon have been music friends for years, even writing a few songs together back in "the day" when they actually had spare time. So they are teaming up again and will come out with a Rally Girls Theme Song soon (er or later). We'll keep you informed! P.S. Since one is a Staunch Conservative and the other a Raving Liberal, it'll be interesting to see how this turns out. Read "Freak Flag" below to figure out which is which. |
| Let Your Freak Flag Fly! We haven't taken any photos that we can make buttons from in the last few rallies, so our Rally Girls Feature this month is the "Freak Flag" button by Sharon. Sharon designed this button months ago, but when she asked Dave for feedback, he called her a "HIPPIE" and said her "FREAK FLAG WAS FLYING!". Sharon, being...well...like most creative types...a bit overly sensitive (her entire self-esteem rides on whether people like her buttons), immediately shelved the design. Six months later someone ran across the prototype in a bin and loved it, so we tried it at an Obama Rally in St. Louis. Well...the Freak Flag Flew...off the shelf! It sold like hotcakes, and were SOLD OUT before the end of the event. The Moral of the Story, of course, is...LET YOUR FREAK FLAG FLY! |
